Violin in Renaissance design

The joy of experimenting with exotic forms of some of the South German luthiers is well evident in this example. Even more extravagant variants than this are known from this school, some with heads of lions, dragons and griffiths. Although rare today, many such instruments appear in paintings of the 16th and 17th C.

 

Die Experimentierfreude mancher süddeutscher Geigenbauer wird durch diese Violine in Renaissance-Form dokumentiert. Neben dieser Form sind auch noch kurvenreichere Varianten, mit zum Teil sehr fantasievollen Köpfen (Löwen, Drachen, Gryphen u.a.) aus dieser Schule bekannt. Obwohl heute sehr rar, sind solche Instrumente recht häufig in der Malerei des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts anzutreffen.
