Caspar Hopf, born 1650 Kraslice (Graslitz) Czech Republic, died 1711 Stolberg Germany. Founder of the Klingenthal school c.1681 and regarded as the best maker of the family. (John Dilworth) This viola da gamba, a particularly excellent instrument, finely crafted, with a rich, red-brown varnish and a beautifully crafted rosette, has an extraordinarily beautiful sound.
